Disclosed are a method for reporting the number of terminals existing within a geographical area in a wireless communication system, and an apparatus therefor. Specifically, the method for reporting the number of terminals existing within a geographical area in a wireless communication system comprises: transmitting, by a mobility management entity (MME), a paging message to a terminal via a base station, if a monitoring event for reporting the number of terminals existing within a geographical area is established; and receiving a cell identifier (cell ID) of the terminal from the base station along with a message transmitted from the terminal in response to the paging message, wherein if the paging message comprises a monitoring usage indication, a tracking area update (TAU) message can be transmitted from the terminal in response to the paging message.
