The present invention relates to the technical field of nano materials. Disclosed are a foam metal-carbon nanotube composite material, a preparation method therefor and an application thereof. The preparation method comprises: pre-treating a polyurethane sponge substrate, then placing the pre-treated polyurethane sponge substrate into a chemical plating solution containing metallic elements to perform chemical plating reaction, and drying to obtain a foam metal catalyst of the polyurethane sponge substrate; then placing into a tube furnace, raising the temperature to 500-550 °C, and introducing hydrogen for 0.5-2 hours; and raising the temperature to 600-800 °C, introducing an acetylene mixed gas to be used as a carbon source, and growing a carbon nano material on a surface of the foam metal catalyst by means of chemical vapor deposition so as to obtain the foam metal-carbon nanotube composite material. Carbon nanofibers or carbon nanotubes prepared by the present invention realize in-situ generation on a surface of a transition metal catalyst, the combination between metal/carbon interfaces is tight, the prepared carbon nanofibers or carbon nanotubes have good dispersity, and the tube diameters are controllable and uniform.
