An apparatus for predicting and controlling the commutation failure of an HVDC system includes an operation state detection part which detects the operation state of the past of a high voltage direct current (HVDC) system, an estimate part which estimates the operation state of the next from the operation state of the past detected by the operation state detection part and detects the AC system frequency of the next through the operation state of the next, and a controller which controls the firing pulse of the HVDC valve based on the AC system frequency of the next and the operation state of the next detected by the estimate part.
