A system and method is disclosed in which a workbook author can decompose a workbook into a series of logically distinct pieces (referred to herein as a "workbook part"). Calculation dependencies between workbook parts can be maintained so that all calculations are accurate throughout the spreadsheet. Organizations can individually manage each workbook part, and thus can be denied access by some users to view or edit any workbook part. Thus, if multiple authors contribute to a strictly controlled workbook, the person in charge of managing spreadsheets can have access to edit only a portion of each author''s interest.
