The present invention relates to a culture medium composition for culturing a stem cell, and a method for culturing a stem cell. In the present invention, the composition and the method are capable of promoting the proliferation of a stem cell without a high-priced growth factor by adding an antioxidant additive containing mercaptoethanol when culturing the stem cell, and promoting the proliferation of the stem cell by overcoming conditions of oxidative stress without a high-priced, low-oxygen and partial-pressure culture medium.
