The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition and a food composition for preventing, treating or alleviating neuroinflammation or neuro-degenerative diseases, comprising a Vaccinium bracteatum Thunb. extract or a fraction thereof as an active ingredient. The Vaccinium bracteatum Thunb. extract or the fraction thereof of the present invention has no side effects by being derived from a natural product which has been in use as a natural medicinal ingredient, inhibits expression of NO, PGE2, iNOS and/or COX-2 genes or proteins, which are factors associated with inflammation, and has an excellent effect of enhancing memory or learning ability, thereby being able to be helpfully used in preventing or treating neuroinflammation or neuro-degenerative diseases.
