The present invention relates to an apparatus for detecting a direction, which may detect a location of a signal source without causing ambiguity for location estimating, and a location estimating method thereof. The location estimating method based on a direction detection according to an embodiment of the present invention includes the steps of: calculating directions of arrival (DOAs), which are six pieces of direction detection information, on the basis of three time differences of arrival (TDOAs), which correspond to time difference information of an arrival signal measured during a reception period; grouping eight pieces of direction detection information by conditionally combining the six pieces of direction detection information; calculating estimated location values and residuals of eight signal sources by applying the least square method to each of the eight pieces of grouped direction detection information; determining whether the estimated location values of the signal sources are effective, using a relationship between the estimated location values of the signal sources and the DOAs; and selecting an estimated location value of a signal source having the smallest residual among the estimated location values of the signal sources, which are obtained through comparison with the relationship with the DOAs, and determining the selected estimated location value of the signal source as a location of the signal source.
