The present invention relates to a method to increase efficiency of an adsorptive material based on carbon such as activated carbon, carbon foam, or the like widely used as an adsorbent for adsorbing heavy metals in industrial wastewater, and to a carbon material having increased efficiency. More particularly, the present invention relates to a method to increase adsorption efficiency for heavy metals by coating a surface of a carbon material with iron oxide, and to a material used therefor. The method to increase adsorption efficiency of a carbon material comprises the following steps of: immersing the carbon material in acid for oxidizing and etching the surface of a carbon material, thereby forming carboxyl groups on the surface, and increasing the surface area; coating the resultant product with ferric sa and heat-treating the resultant product.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2016
