The present invention relates to polysaccharides comprising a carboxyl functional group in which at least one of the carboxyl functional groups is replaced by a derivative of a hydrophobic alcohol. The present invention also relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising one polysaccharide according to the invention and one or more active ingredients. The invention also relates to pharmaceutical compositions wherein the active ingredient is selected from the group consisting of proteins, glycoproteins, peptides and non-peptide therapeutic molecules. The present invention also relates to the use of the functionalized polysaccharides according to the invention in the preparation of the pharmaceutical compositions described above.
