The present invention relates to an adaptive underwater acoustic communication apparatus and a method thereof and, more particularly, to an adaptive underwater acoustic communication apparatus which can adapt for a change in the channel environment by extracting channel information using a channel pilot signal in order to secure performance of an underwater acoustic communication modem according to a change in the time-space environment factor of an underwater acoustic communication channel. To this end, the apparatus comprises: a first modem which transmits a first signal one or more times at constant intervals in order to check characteristics of an underwater channel before transmitting transmission data; and a second modem which receives the first signal from the first modem, analyzes a time and frequency interrelationship between the channel and a change in the gain of the channel for each frequency through time and frequency domain analysis, extracts a modem control variable, and transmits a second signal, including the extracted modem control variable, to the first modem.
