A method of preparing a precursor of a ruthenium-carbene complex, comprising: reacting a salt of purified ruthenium with a hydrogen halide to form an intermediate ruthenium product; and - the reaction of an intermediate ruthenium product with an L-type ligand to form a precursor of the ruthenium-carbene complex. 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the L-type ligand is selected from the group consisting of olefins, phosphines, phosphites, amines, CO, N, and combinations thereof. The method of claim 1, wherein the L-type ligand comprises a cyclic olefin. The method according to claim 3, wherein the cyclic olefin is selected from the group consisting of cyclohexadiene, cycloheptadiene, cyclooctadiene, cyclononadiene, cyclodecadiene, cycloundecadiene, cyclododecadiene, cyclododecatriene, paramentadiene, fellandrene, norbornadiene, ipanene, limonene, lemon. The method according to claim 1, wherein the L-type ligand contains a phosphorus-containing ligand having a PRRR structure, where R, R and R are the same or different, each independently selected from the group consisting of substituted or unsubstituted aryl, substituted or unsubstituted C-C alkyl , substituted or unsubstituted aryloxy, substituted or unsubstituted alkoxy C-C, and combinations thereof, and covalent bonds may additionally exist between two or more of R, R and R such that when two or more of R, R and R are joined, a bidentate ligand to phosphorus is formed. 6. The method of claim 5, wherein the phosphorus-containing ligand comprises triphenylphosphine. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the hydrogen halide is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen chloride, hydrogen bromide and a combination thereof.
