A method of dynamically adjusting a temperature setpoint for exhaust aftertreatment devices, comprising estimating an amount of reductant captured in the exhaust aftertreatment device, predicting the resulting temperature resulting from combustion of an amount of the captured reductant, wherein a temperature rise is determined and added to the current temperature a difference of the predicted substrate temperature and the substrate target temperature, and adjusting the exothermic target reaction in the substrate by means of the previously formed difference, wherein the upstream target temperature is correspondingly reduced to achieve a difference of zero magnitude.
