A fitting for windows, doors, or the like, includes a gear including a gear housing, an input member having a receptacle for an actuating mechanism connector, and an output member drivable by a rotation of the input member for translational movement. It is provided a fixing element which is held in a delivery state of the fitting on the one hand on the transmission housing and on the other hand engages in a recess of the input element, so as to fix the input element in a predetermined rotational position. The fixing element protrudes into the receptacle of the input element and is releasable from the transmission housing for producing an operating state of the fitting by acting on an actuating mechanism connecting element to be introduced into the receptacle.
