The invention relates to melt-spinnable copolymers of polyacrylonitrile (PAN), which can be prepared by a copolymerization of acrylonitrile with an alkoxyalkyl acrylate. As additional comonomers are alkyl acrylates and vinyl esters in question. The invention likewise relates to a process for producing fibers or fiber precursors, in particular carbon fiber precursors, by melt spinning, in which the said copolymer is used. Furthermore, the invention relates to fibers produced in this way, in particular carbon fibers.
