A characteristic blood vessel object value and a characteristic environmental value of the blood vessel object are determined for a blood vessel object (30, 32) to be identified. Depending on histogram data, which is generated from image data of the blood vessel object and the environment of the blood vessel object, it is determined whether the blood vessel object to be identified is a vein or an artery.
