An active noise suppression (ANC) system includes a loudspeaker and one or more processors programmed to implement a zero sub-band sub-loop filtered small-square control algorithm. The algorithm includes a variable bandwidth discrete Fourier transform filter bank having a number of subbands so that the system provides uniform gain in response to a wide band white noise reference signal indicative of road noise in the vehicle Spectrum over a range of frequencies defined by the subbands and partially cancel out the road noise by outputting the loudspeaker.
