A method is proposed for determining limits of a determination of an offset, at least in a region of a voltage-lambda characteristic curve of a first lambda probe (14) arranged in an exhaust duct (14) of an internal combustion engine (10) with respect to a reference voltage-lambda characteristic curve in which a first measurement signal of the first lambda probe (14), a second measurement signal of a second lambda probe (18) and an oxygen balance of a catalytic converter (16) between the first lambda probe (14) and the second lambda probe (18) are used for the determination, wherein the oxygen balance comprises an oxygen input into the catalyst (16), an oxygen discharge from the catalyst (16), and an oxygen storage level difference of the catalyst (16), an upper limit based on a first assumption, from which a first value for a sum of oxygen output and Oxygen storage level difference results, and a lower limit based on a second assumption, from which a second value for a sum of oxygen discharge and oxygen storage level difference results, is determined, wherein the first value is greater than the second value.
