A duty cycle recording system and method for a vehicle having a powertrain having a plurality of components and sensors is disclosed. The duty cycle record system may include a controller and a communication link. The control unit may receive sensor measurements, calculate powertrain component damage estimates based on the measurements, and calculate estimates of estimated remaining life (ERL) based on the damage estimates. The communication link can send the calculated damage and ERL estimates. The control unit may sample transmission torque and speed sensor measurements, and for each scan, may populate a three-dimensional histogram of the transmission torque and transmission speed to which the vehicle has been exposed.
