A battery charging system includes a charging device designed to charge and discharge a battery. The battery system further includes a controller programmed to operate the charging device based on a state of charge of the battery to maintain the state of charge in a partial charge state during a storage period. The charging device may be operated to charge and discharge the battery during the storage period. At the expiration of the storage period, the controller operates the charging device so as to maintain the state of charge in a service charging state. The partial charge state is selected to reduce an amount of wear of the battery relative to the operating charge state for an equal amount of time. The battery charging system includes a remote connection capability so that the storage duration during the storage period can be modified by a remote device.
