An eye tracking system 3 comprises an illuminator (33) that directs infrared light towards a detection region and a camera (32) configured to generate an image of the detection region. A calibration target 31 is detected in the image, and the position or orientation of the camera relative to the calibration target is determined. The system may be used to detect the position or gaze of an eye 21 of a driver 2 of a vehicle 1. The system may be able to detect a plurality of calibration targets or markers. A component of a vehicle, such as an interior light 18 or handle 17, may be used as the calibration target. The calibration target may comprise a retro-reflector.
