A near field transducer (NFT) 300 in the form of a split ring resonator (SRR) comprises a body 302, central aperture 310, and two ends 304, 306 forming a gap 308. The body forms an inductor and the gap 308 forms a capacitor which together form a resonant structure. The body may be made from metal such as silver or gold and the central aperture may be tapered towards the capacitive gap (410, fig.4a). The body may also include inductive aperture resonators to improve focussing of an impinging light source beam onto a recording surface to reduce the power required from the source and the body 302 also acts as a heat sink. The NFT can be integrated into a heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) system such as a hard disk drive.
