A method and system of reducing energy consumption of an energisable device which has an output for effecting a system, the arrangement periodically deactivating and reactivating part of the device in such a way that the change in output does not cause significant change in the associated system. The deactivation period and/or frequency being set by a global performance profile formed from a predetermined default performance profile and an adaptive performance profile based on external data. The global performance profile is automatically and dynamically modified by the adaptive performance profile. The energisable device may be a temperature control device with the adaptive performance profile including environmental data such as long or short range weather forecasts. The energisable device may alternatively be a vehicle engine with the adaptive performance profile including vehicle stability information. Preferably the global performance profile can be manually modified to alter or override the deactivation period. The energy saving provided by the global performance profile compared to standard use may be recorded and displayed to a user.
