A musical instrument, which comprises chord triggers that are each mapped to a specific chord. The specific chord is output, for example via MIDI data, when the chord trigger is activated by a user. The instrument includes means for highlighting, for example via illumination, vibration or heat, certain chord triggers to help the user while playing. The chord triggers which are highlighted have a mapped chord that has a certain similarity with a note repertoire which is previously set. This note repertoire could be a note scale like F-major or G-sharp-Spanish. If the chord of a chord trigger and a previously set note repertoire do match on enough common pitch classes that chord trigger gets highlighted, to show the relationship to the user. In particular, a chord trigger is highlighted if it fulfils a mathematical inequality, which compares a threshold with the cardinality of the intersection of the pitch classes of the mapped specific chord and the pitch classes of the note repertoire.
