The method involves determining a region of interest in an image acquired from an environment of a vehicle, and determining a gray level curve by considering a median level of gray level of pixels situated in the region of interest of image lines. A tangent is calculated from the point of interest in the curve, where the point is situated above a horizon line. A directional coefficient is determined from the tangent. Presence of atmospheric disturbance creating phenomenon is deduced from a value of the determined directional coefficient.
