The invention relates to a method for limiting the search space of a model-based online optimization method for predicting a state variable of a vehicle, with which the greatest possible search space restriction is made possible and with which impairment of the quality of the optimization result of a subsequent optimization method can be avoided or at least minimized. In particular, the method relates to a method for restricting a search space for a model-based online optimization method, which determines a predicted optimal course of a state variable of a vehicle within a predefined search space for a prediction horizon. The method comprises the steps of determining a predicted second course of the state variable along the preceding route section as a function of route information of the preceding route section (S1-S3) and restricting the search space as a function of the determined predicted second course of the state variable (S4). According to the invention, the course of at least one state variable of the vehicle whose change can be attributed at least partially to one or more route information is thus estimated on the basis of the corresponding route information in order to determine an at least approximate course of the state variable. On the basis of this estimated course, the search space for the subsequent, actual accurate determination of the state variable can be limited. Thus, the computation time of a subsequent optimization process can be limited or, for the same computation time, a larger distance horizon or a larger prediction horizon can be used for the optimization, which improves the quality of the optimization process.
