Illumination system (1) for heliport comprising: at least one illumination unit (2) comprising at least one dome (4) of a light emitting element; and cabling (3) comprising a connecting element for connection to an illumination unit; further comprising a cover unit (5) for mounting over the at least one illumination unit and over at least the connecting element of the cabling, wherein the cover unit at an bottom side is provided with recesses for receiving the illumination unit and/or the connecting element of the cabling, and at an top side is provided with openings for allowing the at least one dome of the illumination unit extending there through, such that, when installed, multiple cover units are arranged to form a touchdown circle and/or a helipad H-area of the heliport.
