The disclosure relates to a method for identifying a source of noise disturbing a data communication from or to a communication device (14). A communication device (14) successively measures (101) the amount of errors detected in the data communication per a defined period of time and extracts (102) error events out of the data set of the measured error values. In a further step for a set of defined criteria the characteristics of the error events are calculated (103). Then a statistical analysis of the error events is performed (104) resulting in a classification of the error events. The classification results will be compared (105) with a set of known patterns of classified error events from typical sources of noise and by determining (106) the best fitting known pattern of classified error events the disturbing source of noise (16) is identified.
