The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus as well as a plant for the anaerobic recovery of methane, in particular for the controlled recovery of methane, optionally containing solids, anaerobic methane-containing wastewater, wherein the methane is present in the wastewater predominantly in dissolved form. The process of the present invention is based on the principle of vacuum degassing in which large outgassing surfaces are produced in a reactor through which the anaerobic effluents are passed. The outgassing surfaces can be increased in particular by the generation and maintenance of turbulent flows of the methane-containing wastewater. Additionally, by using a stripping gas, dissolved methane can be stripped from the water phase, or by using a carrier gas, the methane content in the gas phase in the reactor can be reduced to accelerate outgassing of dissolved methane.
