PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recording device, ink abnormal discharge detection method, and initial shift detection method that are able to restrict degradation in operation efficiency and cost performance resulting from initial shift of a nozzle.SOLUTION: An ink jet recording device comprises: a head unit (23) in which a plurality of nozzles are arrayed and respective inks are discharged from the openings of the nozzles; a storage part (43) holding initial misalignment nozzle area information (432) relating to the appearance characteristic of an initial misalignment nozzle, in which initial misalignment has been caused in at least one of an amount of discharged ink and the direction of ink discharge among the nozzles; a reading part (25) that reads an image recorded by the head unit; and a control part (40) that detects presence or absence of ink abnormal discharge from a specific test image read by the reading part. On the basis of initial misalignment information held in the storage part, the control part detects abnormal discharge not resulting from the initial misalignment.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
