PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic machine and its operational method capable of restricting generation of oscillation even if a failure occurs in some of a plurality of cylinders.SOLUTION: A hydraulic machine comprises: a plurality of pistons 26 configured to reciprocate in conjunction with a rotary shaft at different time phases from each other within a period during which a rotary shaft 22 rotates once; a plurality of cylinders 24 for forming a plurality of operation chambers together with the plurality of pistons; a state changeover unit for switching the state of each of the operation chambers between an active state in which energy conversion is performed between rotation energy of the rotary shaft and pressure energy in the operation chamber and an inactive state in which the energy conversion is not performed; and a controller for controlling the state changeover unit, and fixes in the inactive state at least one operation chamber having a different time phase of piston reciprocation from an abnormal operation chamber in which malfunction is generated among the plurality of operation chambers or reduces the frequency of making it being in the active state.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
