PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for processing sensor analyte data, the system and method comprising: initiating calibration (60), updating the calibration (100), evaluating clinical acceptability of a reference and sensor analyte data (80), and evaluating the quality of the sensor calibration (110).SOLUTION: During initial calibration, analyte sensor data is evaluated for a predetermined time period to determine stability of the sensor (10). The sensor can be calibrated using a calibration set of one or more matched sensor and reference analyte data pairs. The calibration can be updated after the evaluation of the calibration set for best calibration based on inclusion criteria and newly received reference analyte data. A fail-safe mechanisms is realized based on the clinical acceptability of the reference and analyte data and the quality of the sensor calibration. An algorithm is realized for performing optimized, prospective and retrospective analysis of estimated blood analyte data from an analyte sensor (10).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
