PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a method for producing a hydrocarbon reforming catalyst that reforms light hydrocarbons such as methane with steam while containing sulfur compounds in the raw material, and converts to gas such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide with a high performance and with a stability; and a method for reforming hydrocarbon using a hydrocarbon reforming catalyst.SOLUTION: The method for producing hydrocarbon reforming catalyst includes: adding a precipitant to a mixed solution in which a nickel compound and a magnesium compound are in a molar ratio of nickel and magnesium of 0.05/0.95 to 0.3/0.7, to co-precipitate nickel and magnesium and produce a precipitate of hydrate; adding alumina sol or alumina powder and water to said precipitate, and mixing the same to produce a mixture; and drying and calcining said mixture to produce a hydrocarbon reforming catalyst, such that said hydrocarbon reforming catalyst has an alumina content of 5 to 30 mass%.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
