PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To assist detection and monitoring of a process variable trend in a process control plant.SOLUTION: A graphic display application within a process control monitoring system may implement and display each graphic trend symbol 122 in order to graphically indicate or encapsulate information on a current trend and value of a process variable within a process control plant. The graphic display application can display the graphic trend symbol in a spatially realistic location within a graphical representation of the process control plant, while the graphic display application can maintain a hierarchical structure or each hierarchical level of the process plant. The graphic display application can also include a navigation pane and a zoom feature that enable a user to quickly drill down through tend data to obtain more information and to support problem identification and diagnosis tasks.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5
