Oil from vegetable and animal fats is hydrolyzed into fatty acids for the Kolbe reaction. The present invention electrochemically decarboxylates C4-C28 fatty acids from sources selected on the basis of saturated and unsaturated fatty acid content to reduce the anode passivation voltage during the synthesis of C6-C54 hydrocarbons. It relates to a highly productive Kolbe reaction process. The C6-C54 hydrocarbons undergo olefin metathesis and / or hydroisomerization reaction processes to produce heavy fuel oils, diesel fuels, kerosene fuels, lubricant base oils, and polymers, detergents, and other fine chemicals.
