An unknown microorganism in a sample is identified. Mass spectral determinations going back to genus or species classification levels are supplemented by detailed determination of the underlying classification levels or variants by infrared spectra using a limited reference library of infrared spectra. These libraries may be genus-specific including only the infrared spectrum of one genus of microorganisms, or species-specific including only the infrared spectrum of one species of microorganism. [Effect] Robust mass spectral identification of unknown microbial species is mainly used to identify medically important variants such as pathogenic types (eg EHEC and EPEC) and antibiotic resistant microorganisms (eg MRSA).
