Sample preparation device for direct numerical simulation of rock properties

A sample preparation device, and a method for preparing a rock sample using such a device, which is useful in connection with digital numerical simulation of rock properties. The disclosed device includes a diamond wire cutter that is fixedly mounted. Three linear translation stages are connected to the sample holder. One of the translation stages moves the sample in a direction parallel to the surface of the cutting wire. The other two translation stages move the sample in different directions and, when actuated together, advance the sample over a short distance in a direction away from the cutting wire surface. A short piecewise linear cut is created in the sample to provide a sample of the desired shape with a small cross section. [Selection] Figure 1
