An apparatus and method for producing a fusion reaction using a plasma initiator, an electron injector and a magnetic coil cusp confinement arrangement. The plasma initiator generates a high beta plasma within the reaction chamber to confine electrons within the reaction chamber. The electron injector creates a plasma potential well in the reaction chamber to confine ions in the reaction chamber and accelerate the ions to fusion related energy. [Selection] Figure 4
