A sensor element (10) for detecting the ratio of gas components in the measurement gas or the temperature of the measurement gas is proposed for detecting at least one characteristic of the measurement gas in the measurement gas space. The first layer (30) is opposite the solid electrolyte layer (12). The second layer (32) is on the side of the solid electrolyte layer (12). The ceramic material of the first layer (30) and the ceramic material of the second layer (32) include yttrium doped zirconium dioxide, particularly zirconium dioxide doped with yttrium oxide. Se of the first layerThe lamellar material shows a higher yttrium doping amount than the ceramic material of the second layer (32). The first layer (30) has a higher porosity than the second layer (32).
