PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a red phosphor having an emission peak with narrow half width and having excellent light emitting properties, and a process for producing the same; a phosphor-containing composition and a light-emitting device using the phosphor; and an image display and a lighting apparatus using the light-emitting device. PSOLUTION: A phosphor includes a crystalline phase having the chemical composition represented by the following formula [1], wherein a proportion of Mn is 0.1-40 mol.% based on the total amount of MSP4/SPand Mn, and having a specific surface area of 1.3 mSP2/SP/g. MSP1/SPSB2/SBMSP4/SPFSB6/SB:R [1], wherein MSP1/SPis at least one element selected from the group consisting of K and Na; MSP4/SPis a metal element containing Si; R is an activator element containing at least Mn.
