PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To consider appearance or disappearance of some areas of an iris based on nonlinear properties of iris displacement and pupillary dilatation, and identify or authenticate the individual by iris recognition obtaining profit from isotropy of this movement without the need for specific learning to the individual.SOLUTION: A method is performed by a system for storing at least one binary code of a reference iris and a binary code of an associated reference mask. The method comprises: step 106 for matching at least one ring of the iris of the acquired image and one of ring of the reference iris so as to minimize a matching distance between the acquired image and the reference image, wherein the matching distance is acquired from the determined and stored reference iris codes and the associated mask codes by computing a sum of distances between each of the rings of the matched acquired image iris and the ring of corresponding reference iris; and step 108 of identifying and/or authenticating the individual when the minimized matching distance is less than a predetermined threshold.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5
