Provided are a method for forming a periodic fine structure on a surface of a zirconia ceramic that is difficult to mechanically process without adversely affecting the heat, and a zirconia ceramic having a periodic fine structure formed on the surface. The surface of the zirconia ceramic is irradiated with linearly or circularly polarized laser light to form a periodic structure with irregularities in the laser light spot. By irradiating the surface of the zirconia ceramic with linearly polarized ultrashort pulse laser light, striped irregularities parallel to the polarization direction can be formed in the laser light spot. By irradiating the ceramic surface with circularly polarized ultrashort pulse laser light, it is possible to periodically form mesh-like convex portions and dot-like concave portions.
