PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 1,2-propanediol from vegetable biomass by fermentation.SOLUTION: The method of the invention comprises: culturing a microorganism that produces 1,2-propanediol in an appropriate culture medium comprising a sucrose source; and recovering the produced 1,2-propanediol, where the microorganism can utilize sucrose as a sole carbon source for the 1,2-propanediol production.
