A power supply includes an alternating current input, a rectifier operable to generate a rectified signal based on the alternating current input, a voltage multiplier operable to generate a multiplied voltage based on the alternating current input, and an output operable to yield an electrical current based on the rectified signal from the rectifier and on the multiplied voltage from the voltage multiplier. The rectified signal from the rectifier is connected to the output when a voltage of the rectified signal is higher than the multiplied voltage, and the multiplied voltage from the voltage multiplier is connected to the output when the multiplied voltage is higher than the voltage of the rectified signal.
