Abstract Compositions and Methods for Diagnosing and Treating Hyperthyroidism in Companion Animals An isolated DNA molecule comprising a fragment of the gene encoding feline nis is described as well as methods for its use. Methods are also provided for rational dietary development of food composition suitable for administration to feline pets suffering from hyperthyroidism, comprising (a) access to at least one database comprising a first set of functional gene profile data from a sample from an animal's biological fluid or tissue to the animal's physiological condition, where the functional gene profile is that of the feline nis gene; (b) access to at least one database comprising a second data set relating to the effects of bioactive dietary components on functional gene profile; (c) use of an algorithm extracted from these datasets, processing input that defines the physiological condition to produce a nutritional formula that promotes welfare of a feline companion animal suffering from hyperthyroidism; and (d) preparing a food composition based on the nutritional formula.
