Summary "Composite intercorporeal device adapted for insertion between two adjacent vertebrae and method for forming a composite interbody suitable for insertion between two adjacent vertebrae" is a composite intercorporeal device for use with spinal fusion surgery. The composite interbody device comprises a central body made from a radiolucent biocompatible polymer (e.g., peek or uhmwpe) and metal plates which are placed on the upper and lower surfaces of the central body. The metal plates comprise an end plate that is adjacent to a vertebral body and an intermediate plate that is adjacent to the central body. the end plates may have one or more passage matrices to facilitate bone growth within the end plates to secure the intercorporeal device within the intervertebral space. intermediate plates may also have one or more passage arrays to allow the central body to attach to the end plates. the endplate passage arrays are not aligned with the intermediate plate passage arrays so that the central body polymer material will not penetrate the endplate where bone growth is stimulated and vice versa .
