Biphasic machinable brass with reduced lead content, suitable for forming by cold rolling, comprising Bi and sulphides of manganese / zinc. Brass contains 57 to 60 wt. % Cu, 0.4 to 1.0 wt. % Bi, 0.4 to 1.0 wt. % Sn, 0.1 to 0.8 wt. % Fe, 0.005 to 1.0 wt. % Mn, 0.01 to 0.5 wt. % S. It may further contain up to 0.4 wt. % Pb, the remainder to 100% being constituted by zinc.
