This document discloses methods for detecting a cancer patient that will be treatable by a fibroblast growth factor receptor inhibitor (FGFR), and methods for treating cancer patients. Such methods include analyzing a biological sample taken from a patient for the presence of one or more FGFR mutants from the panel of mutant FGFR genes. This document also discloses kits and primers for detecting the presence of one or more FGFR mutant genes in a biological sample.
