Video fire detector based on infrared thermal imaging. An environment is monitored by two IR cameras in a predefined geometrical relationship with overlapping (e.g. opposite) field of view. Each camera comprises a sensor matrix, which is divided in sub-areas. The intersection of the fields of view of the sub-areas of each camera define particular volumes of the monitored space. Thermal parameters such as temperature and temperature change are monitored for each sub-volume, group of sub-volumes, and global volume to determine whether a fire is present. The fire can be precisely located by the processing unit, which is connected to an extinguishing system comprising spouts, which are directed by the processing unit towards the source of the fire and in the right amount to contrast the fire's energy.
