This invention relates to the manufacture of sintered microcrystalline alumina abrasives from hydrated alumina with improved product features. The process as described herein simplifies the production of microcrystalline alumina abrasives having an average crystal size in the range of 0.1 to 0.6 microns. The microstructure of the new sintered alumina abrasive can be tailored suitably to enhance the performance of the abrasive phenomenally.
