A method for removing random impulse noise from a degraded noisy image is proposed, which consists of an impulse detector that differentiates the invalid frames from the valid ones and a reconstruction filter that reproduces only the noisy pixels in the image. This is an iterative process which confirms that the structural similarity index between the reconstructed image and the noise free image reaches an optimum consistent value. The frame validation algorithm used for impulse detection involves a few less complex arithmetic operations resulting in reduced complexity that paves way for an easy implementation of the technique with VLSI circuits.
